The Last Great American Car

The Last Great American Car

1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Talisman

Of course, we are using the “large” definition of great..not necessarily the “superlative” definition.

This Fleetwood Talisman is basically the most luxurious, the best Cadillac made before they were downsized due to the fuel crises. This remarkably low-mile example (under 50k showing on the odometer) has a history with two┬árenowned auto writers (and colleagues of COTD’s Large Editor at Large) Sajeev Mehta and Jack Baruth.

Five years ago, Sajeev purchased this beauty from a distance, and enlisted Jack to deliver it from Ohio to Houston. The adventures involved can be recounted here, here, and here.

While this car isn’t perfect – some trim work needs help, and the eight-track needs some serious repair – this is a remarkable beauty of a very different time. A time when Cadillac may have been the standard of the world, but relative upstarts from Germany were changing minds everywhere.

Oh, and 500 cubic inches of proper American V8 has to be an absolute blast.

It’s on eBay in Houston with reserve not yet met.
