1971 Datsun 240Z
The original Datsun 240Z is a favorite here at COTD.com. It is the most iconic Japanese sports car – indeed, it’s the car that made people realize that the Japanese could build high quality, desirable cars. Thus, the earliest Zs are beginning to get attention from collectors.
At first glance, this ’71 240Z looks quite good. The dark green paint looks like a factory color, and the hideous hubcaps that were almost always tossed by the dealer are present. But look closer. Under the hood shows the evidence of a respray – the engine compartment is tan or yellow. The paintwork looks splotchy on the hatch – almost as if it were painted with a roller. The interior is a bit rough, with a carpeted pad covering the likely-cracked dash.
That’s not to say that this couldn’t be brought back to life. We don’t see any rot – though the pictures aren’t quite good enough to say for certain, though the California location makes it likely the steel is pretty clean. We’d love to see this restored.
It’s on eBay in California with no reserve.
